Guided Meditation is a mental discipline by which one attempts to get beyond the reflexive, thinking mind into a deeper state of relaxation or awareness. To Meditate is practice and an important part of the daily lives of the religion's monks. Meditation may be for a religious purpose, but even before being brought to the West it was used in secular contexts, such as the martial arts. Guided Meditation techniques have also been used by Western theories of counseling and psychotherapy.
Meditate can also help us to understand our own mind and like yoga originated in Vedic Hinduism many centuries ago. It was much later adopted into a wide variety of practices of religious and non-religious formats which emphasize mental activity. Meditation is the most effective way of destroying temptation however it shows us that we can gain a greater understanding of life through knowing who we are. Meditation relaxes your body enough to change it from protection mode which gives priority to your muscles to run from a threat and to growth mode gives you priority to your internal organs to maintain long term health.
Meditation can also help us to understand our own mind. The most basic approach to learning meditation is to relax, let go, and do nothing. Over time the hara point will become more noticeable as your meditation grows stronger. Drinking herb tea or hot water before meditation sessions relaxes the gut and facilitates awareness of the hara. While active meditation methods can be very helpful, they are not complete systems in themselves.
My general recommendation is that a single forty minute meditation session practiced every day is a minimum effort, and scientists have found that amount of meditation is enough to physically enlarge portions of the brain involved in awareness. Remember that meditation is an escape to reality, not an escape from reality. Through meditation we can know who and what we truly are.
