The original name as mentioned in the ancient scriptures (Maha Bharat, Geeta and Ramayan) is …

" BHARAT "

The Sanskrit meaning of the name is the "One that bears the weight’ ( Bhaartah )

The people who inhabit this country (much before the moghul invaders ) still belong to the world’s first civilisation – which began near the banks of the river ‘SINDHU’

From Sindhu, the modern day world ‘Hindu’ has arisen.

Even today, ‘Indu’ is a also a popular name for Hindu girls in India and it means the same thing

The original people of the land belong to the ‘Indus Valley Civilisation’ and their religion and culture is called Vedic Hindu Culture or Hinduism.

Bhagavan Ram, Yog, Meditation, Ved, Manusmruti, modern mathematics, astronomy, medicine and political concepts used all over the world are products of this very civilisation.

OK. Nice to know some history. I appreciate it. But some people don’t really like the idea of the questioner answering his own answer.
